Teaching values - if I were someone else

17/2/2017

Komentarze

These exercises require students to imagine being someone else for a moment. Recently I noticed how difficult it is for some teenagers. I believe that the more chances we give them to feel like someone else, the bigger the chances for them becoming more sensitive. The following exercises develop empathy, understanding, acceptance, dealing with difficult situations, sensitivity, creativity, bravery, spontaneity, humour, critical thinking, awareness of the dangers and threats to the environment, awareness of values and their impact.

Preparation: copy the poster with a love cloud for each student in your class

Procedure:
  1. Ask your students to create together a love cloud (a cloud with different words and expressions connected with love). Draw a heart on the board and ask students to complete it with different ideas.
  2. Show students your version of a love cloud. Give each student a reduced copy of the poster. Play bingo: students choose 5 words, teacher reads definitions of random words, students cross out the word if it is the one they have chosen. When they have crossed out all 5 words they shout “Bingo”. Make sure that students know what word is being described.
  3. Put students in pairs. One student gives a definition of a word from the heart (it can’t be the one they crossed out in the previous exercise), the other student guesses. They describe 4-5 words each.
  4. Next students use the words they have described or the words not used yet to write a story. Give them about 10 minutes for that. Finally students present their stories.

Rozpoznawanie emocji to trudne zadanie, dlatego warto ćwiczyć tę umiejętność. Dzisiaj przykład zadania na podstawie filmu Mind the gap, w którym uczniowie będą rozpoznawać uczucia głównej bohaterki i spekulować, co wpłynęło na jej zachowanie i stan ducha.

Teaching values - not as it seems to be

Komentarze

Today I would like to share with you a set of tasks developing optimism, (self-)appreciation, gratitude, self-confidence, diversity, ability to judge, wisdom, empathy, critical thinking, respect, understanding, openness, sensitivity.

The bright side

Whenever during the school year, at the beginning of the lesson or if you simply have some time ask your students to:
  • say three good things that happened to them last week / yesterday / at the weekend.
  • talk about what they were grateful for last week / yesterday / at the weekend.
  • write five positive features of character about themselves. And then add five more.
  • say three things that always make them smile / that made them smile yesterday.
